About This Site

Top Cat Grooming Care is a small, independent site about grooming cats at home. Every review, comparison and guide here comes from hands-on use on a long-haired cat that mats and sheds and a short-haired cat that would rather skip the whole thing. We cover deshedding brushes, nail clippers, grooming gloves, grooming wipes and at-home dental care, and we say plainly where a product falls short.

Grooming Safety

Cat grooming tools are simple, but a cat can be hurt by them. When trimming nails, cut only the clear tip and stay well away from the pink quick, which bleeds and hurts if nicked. Keep styptic powder nearby, trim a few nails at a time, and stop if your cat is panicking.

Brush gently. Slicker bristles can scratch or cause brush burn if pressed hard or dragged over the same spot. Never cut out a mat with scissors close to the skin; cat skin is thin and easy to slice. Tight or widespread mats belong with a professional groomer or your veterinarian.

Use wipes and dental products made for cats, keep them away from the eyes, and stop using any product that causes redness, hair loss, sneezing or drooling. Human toothpaste is not safe for cats. Grooming products do not replace professional dental cleanings or veterinary care, and any lump, sore, bad odor, sudden change in grooming habits or bleeding gums should be checked by a vet.
